If the proposal is a mono-beneficiary (such as an ERC), the proposal is submitted by the PI. If this is a consortium, the proposal is submitted by the Coordinator (lead PI).
The "submit" button can be pressed at any time, and as many times as needed until the deadline. After the deadline there is no possibility to make any changes.
The ERC is one stage submission with 2 stage evaluation process. Whereas collaborative proposals may have two submission deadlines and 2 stage evaluation process.
There are specific calls that refer to third countries (such as Japan and Mexico). Other calls are directed to EU member states and Associated countries. Organizations from third countries may take part in the project, however they might not be funded by the EU. Please see the list of countries, and applicable rules for funding.
First PhD awarded 2-7 years prior to the call’s year. (extensions can be given due to certain circumstances such as maternity/paternity leave/ long-term illness etc. For more details see here).
First PhD awarded 7-12 years prior to the call's year.(extensions can be given due to certain circumstances such as maternity/paternity leave/ long-term illness etc. For more details see here).
None, unless in a proposal which was submitted and rejected in the first stage in previous years - see further details below
Please see the eligibility criteria in the table above, also, you can check your eligibility using our calculation tool.
The ERC aims at an individual PI who leads a research team. If your research requires specific expertise you can include an expert collaborator in your team as long as you are the team leader and PI.
An ERC Synergy Grant aims to provide support for a small group of two to four Principal Investigators jointly addressing ambitious research problems that could not be addressed by the individual Principal Investigators and their teams working alone.
Yes. All applicants who passed to stage 2 but where not funded, irrespective of their grade, can resubmit the following call.
All ERC grant holders can submit PoC proposal. The restriction is that the ERC grant is either on-going or the project has ended less than 12 months before first of January of the year of the ERC-PoC call.
Principal Investigators may submit only one proposal under each yearly Work Programme Proof of Concept call, if multiple submissions are made at different cut-off dates, only the first eligible proposal will be evaluated.
A maximum of three Proof of Concept Grants may be awarded per main grant project, except for Synergy Grant, in which case a maximum of six Proof of Concept Grants may be awarded per ERC funded project.
After the approval of the EU funding for the grant, the process of signature is called Grant Agreement Preparations (GAP).
EU Desk personnel will assist during the process, which may take between several weeks to several months. In case of a consortium, the GAP process is the responsibility of the Coordinator who will contact the EU Desk for the needed information.
After the grant was approved, and before signing the Grant Agreement, the PI will receive an email requesting all necessary clarifications. If you have any questions regarding ethics, you can contact Ifat Propper (ifat.propper@mail.huji.ac.il), Research Ethics Coordinator. You can also find more information on theAuthority for R&D site.
During the Grant Agreement Preparations, the PI must choose a start date for the project. There are two options for start date:
The first day of the month following the signature of the agreement by both parties. This is the earliest date possible.
A later “fixed” start date on the first day of the month as agreed between the PI and the EU. In this case, the PI will be required to provide a justification.
The budget opens right before the start date of the project as mentioned in the agreement with the EU, following the signature of the EU on the agreement and the completion of all project details in the Authority for R&D's Research System by the PI.
The reporting periods are stated in the agreement. The reports are due 60 days after the end of each reporting period and consist of a Technical and Financial Report and/or Scientific Report.
The reports are completed in an online template accessed through the Grant Management Services area via the Funding & Tenders portal. To access the reports, follow these instructions "How to Access the Reports".
The Open Access policy requires PIs to provide online access at no charge to peer-reviewed scientific publications and to research data. While FP7 projects were strongly recommended to provide open access, later projects are obliged to.
Open Access costs are eligible for EU funding. For more information please see the European Research Council web page and guidelines.
Requirements related to Research Data Management are embedded in each ERC grant agreement. The exact requirements depend on the ERC Work Programme under which each grant was funded. Read more about how to prepare Data Management Plan (DMP), deposit research data and other outputs, and when to make them available through open access, in the European Research Council web page.
